Ally McCoist has given a strong view on Atletico Madrid’s goal against Liverpool, saying there’s ‘absolutely no way’ it should have stood.

The visitors scored through Marcos Llorente in first half stoppage time to make the scoreline 2-1.

Goals from Andy Robertson and Mohamed Salah gave Liverpool the dream start to the game, putting them two goals up with just six minutes played at Anfield.

Llorente’s goal did however half the deficit for Atletico.

But the goal did come with some controversy.

When Llorente made contact with the ball, Antoine Griezmann was in an offside position and appeared to be in Alisson's eyeline.

The Liverpool goalkeeper immediately approached the referee, but there wasn’t any intervention from the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) to overturn the goal.

But as soon as the ball goes behind Griezmann, he is affecting the goalkeeper, because he is blocking the sight of the ball for the goalkeeper; therefore, in my opinion, the goal should not have stood."

Commentator Darren Fletcher simply responded with: "I agree wholeheartedly with what you just said."

The goal wasn’t the only controversial referee decision in the first half.

Liverpool were awarded a penalty for handball at 2-0, but a VAR check showed that there wasn’t any contact with the defender’s hand and overturned the decision.
