It seems the dire warnings of life without Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane were painfully accurate for Liverpool, after a toothless display against the 10 men of Arsenal.

Will Liverpool continue to struggle without Salah and Mane?

They were always going to struggle without their two most dangerous and creative players for the whole month of January, yet the impact looks even worse than Jurgen Klopp envisaged.

Without Salah and Mane, if there is this same lack of urgency and inability to move the ball swiftly in the return next week, then Liverpool can say goodbye to another competition…and start thinking seriously about the pair’s contract demands instead, because without them, they are not the same team.

The closest Liverpool came through a horribly pedestrian second period was when Taki Minamino inexplicably blazed over an open goal in the 89th minute, as the otherwise excellent Araron Ramsdale missed a cross.

Yet if anyone should be upset about the dismissal, it is the home side (and most certainly not the Arsenal fans who want him gone.

In fact, the best chance of the second period came for the visitors, Kieran Tierney’s ball catching the Reds back line to allow Bukayo Saka to steal in, but Alisson’s swift response and huge frame came to the rescue.
