Liverpool have expressed interest in signing Atalanta star Teun Koopmeiners, although they are not currently leading the negotiations to secure his signature, according to Football Insiders.

The online news portal claims that “the Reds are in contract with the Dutch international’s agents over bringing him to Anfield this summer.

“Juventus are currently leading the race to sign the 26-year-old, offering him the option to remain in Italy beyond this season.”

Atalanta have reportedly set an asking price of £50 million for Koopmeiners.

The Dutch international would reunite with incoming Liverpool boss Arne Slot if he were to move to Anfield this summer.

Previously, he played under Slot during the Dutchman’s sole year in charge of AZ Alkmaar back in the 2019-20 season.

Koopmeiners has had a remarkable season with the Bergamo-based club, scoring 15 goals and providing six assists from midfield in 45 appearances.

The midfielder was part of the Atalanta side that stunned Liverpool in the Europa League quarter-finals earlier last month.

Atalanta surprised Liverpool and the outgoing manager Jurgen Klopp by winning the first leg 3-0 at Anfield.

Liverpool managed to secure a 1-0 victory in the second leg, but were unable to overturn their deficit, thereby dashing Klopp’s hopes of a fairy-tale ending to his tenure with the Reds in Europe.

Football Insider further stated that “Anfield chiefs were clearly impressed by Koopmeiners’s performances and have now taken the step of registering their interest in a potential deal.”

Koopmeiners recently added fuel to speculation surrounding a potential move to the Reds this summer, revealing that he has informed Atalanta of his desire to depart.

In a lighthearted manner, he remarked that he could even endure the rainy days in England, further hinting at his openness to a move to the Premier League.

“Last year there was concrete interest from Napoli.

I told Atalanta that in the coming summer I want to move,” Koopmeiners told Dutch newspaper De Telegraaf.

“But something really interesting must present itself to leave Bergamo.

“My fiancée and I are having a great time in Italy, but for some clubs in England I could even bear the rainy days there…

“I hope options present themselves so I can think about it.”
