The 2020/21 season was the strangest any of us will ever see.

With little time to prepare for matches in a congested schedule, and most fixtures taking place in front of deserted stands, it was thankfully the closest football will ever get to laboratory conditions.

Jürgen Klopp’s side only made 4.3 per cent fewer pressures per game this term, with their average dropping from 148 to 142.

At the other end of the scale, Sheffield United saw the smallest shift – for all the good it ultimately did them – but then came Liverpool.

By retaining the intensity of their press better than any of their rivals, Liverpool should be well placed to take advantage next term.

In such a sterile environment, it was little surprise that the most heavily funded teams rose to the top, with the Manchester clubs taking the top two spots in the Premier League and Chelsea winning the ultimate prize in Europe.

This was always going to be a challenge for Liverpool, who have built their recent success upon an insatiable work rate and willingness to hassle and harry their opponents across every inch of the pitch.
