Liverpool have permanently retired the no.20 shirt in Diogo Jota’s memory.
The number will not be used across all levels of the club, from first team to the women’s and academy level sides following Jota’s untimely death.
Fans had called for the digit to be shelved in commemoration of the 28-year-old after he and brother Andre Silva were killed in a road accident last week.
Anfield chiefs chose the tribute, a first in the club’s history after consulting with the forward’s wife Rute Cardoso and his parents Isabel and Joaquim.
Jota’s family travelled to Merseyside on Friday to see the tributes left outside the Reds’ home after he and Silva lost their lives in northern Spain on July 3.
They were accompanied on the emotional visit to the stadium by the Premier League champions’ entire squad in their first public outing since his passing.
Arne Slot’s side timed the announcement of Jota’s shirt retirement for 20.20.
Further tributes are planned before Liverpool’s first game without their late teammate on Sunday in a pre-season friendly against Preston North End.
Club anthem You’ll Never Walk Alone will be played before kick-off followed by a minute’s silence with both sets of players wearing black armbands.
A fan memorial wall has been launched near Anfield while two murals that will serve as further tributes to Jota are set to be installed in the local area.
