Liverpool have announced they will permanently retire the number 20 shirt in honour of Diogo Jota.

The Portuguese was killed in a car crash last week (July 3), along with his brother, Andre Silva.

There had been widespread calls from supporters for the club to retire the jersey, which Jota wore throughout his Reds career after joining the club from Wolves in September 2020, following his passing.

After consultation with Jota’s wife, Rute, and family - who paid a visit to Anfield on Friday (July 11) to visit the memorial site set up in honour of both brothers - the club have now taken the decision to permanently retire the shirt in honour of the Portuguese.

Announced at 20.20 on Friday night, the retirement will apply to the club at all levels, including the men’s first team, women’s team and the Reds’ various Academy sides.

Liverpool have never retired a shirt number before, with Jota posthumously receiving the honour as the club pays a unique tribute to a unique player.

The club have taken the decision with the move not only a reflection of Jota’s contributions to Liverpool as a player, which saw him help the Reds win the Premier League, FA Cup and League Cup in five years at Anfield, but also the profound personal impact he made on teammates, colleagues and supporters.

Jota and Silva were killed when their vehicle veered off the road following a tyre blowout on July 3

They had been travelling across Spain in order to catch a ferry back to the United Kingdom ahead of the start of pre-season.

The majority of the Liverpool first team squad, Arne Slot and a number of Reds officials travelled to the pair’s hometown of Gondomar for their funeral last weekend.

Meanwhile, they also paid a visit to the memorial site set up at Anfield in honour of the brothers, alongside Rute and members of the pair’s families, to pay their respects on Friday afternoon.

Liverpool will play their first match since Jota’s passing on Sunday 13 July when they travel to Preston North End.

On Friday, the two clubs announced a number of tributes planned in honour of Jota and Silva that will take place at Deepdale ahead of kick-off.

Supporters attending the match have been asked to be in their seats by 2.45pm ahead of the 3pm kick-off as a mark of respect to the two brothers, with tributes then getting underway at roughly 2.50pm.

Claudia Rose Maguire – wife of former Preston player Sean – will first sing a rendition of Can’t Help Falling In Love, which will then be followed by Liverpool’s anthem of You’ll Never Walk Alone.

While the latter is sung, North End captain Ben Whiteman will lay a wreath in front of the visiting supporters in the Bill Shankly Kop, ahead of a minute’s silence just before kick-off.

During the minute’s silence, digital tributes will be displayed on the big screen and across LEDs at Deepdale.

Both sets of players will also wear black armbands in honour of Jota and Silva.

The Championship outfit have also created a commemorative edition of the matchday programme that features written tributes to Diogo and Andre.

The 16-page matchday programme, dedicated to the brothers, will be free to all supporters with a match ticket on the day

There will be multiple members of staff around the ground handing out the programmes.

The match will be broadcast on ITV 1 in the UK, on LFCTV and streamed globally on All Red Video, with coverage there beginning at 2.15pm BST.

A pre-match programme will be broadcast live from the stadium across LFC’s social media channels and YouTube until kick-off, when rights restrictions take effect.
