Alvaro Arbeloa capped off his Liverpool career with a feisty on-pitch argument before completing a dream return to Real Madrid.

The Spaniard signed for the Reds in January 2007 from Deportivo de la Coruna and quickly became a regular feature at right-back.

But just two years after moving to Anfield, Arbeloa was closing in on a transfer back to his former club Madrid.

And during his final Liverpool appearance in a 2-0 win at West Brom, he was involved in a heated row with teammate Jamie Carragher.

Arbeloa blocked a shot from Marc-Antoine Fortune as the Baggies eyed a late response, but Carragher seemed less than impressed.

He was frustrated with his positioning as Liverpool held onto a clean sheet and later told The Overlap: "He was going forward too much."

Carragher and Arbeloa engaged in some pushing before teammates intervened, with the former likening his passion to Michael Jordan.

The basketball legend was the subject of Netflix documentary 'The Last Dance', which was referenced by Carragher in his recalling of the story.

"I absolutely loved how intense the guy was because that's what I'm like with football," the Liverpool legend previously said on Sky Sports.

"He's obviously the best player ever in basketball, I'm nowhere near that in football.

"I'm sure Graeme [Souness] can resonate with that as well.

When you're so passionate about something it will push you to the line and it's difficult to not then cross that line.

"I was on a football pitch and nearly struck one of my own teammates or punched Arbeloa.

"I don't look back at that proud but that was always going to happen at some stage or the odd little thing in training because it was so intense you wanted to win, everything mattered, and at times you would cross the line.

"To then be criticised for that when he had the career he did, he took his team to somewhere they had never been before and broke all kinds of record in the NBA."

After nearly coming to blows on the Hawthorns pitch, Carragher was told to apologise to his fellow defender by manager Rafa Benitez.

Just a few weeks later, Arbeloa left Liverpool for Madrid in a reported €4million [£3.4m] transfer.

And it's a move that certainly paid off as he won a LaLiga title and two Champions Leagues with his former academy club.

Arbeloa was also a two-time Copa del Rey winner while also lifting the Supercopa de Espana, UEFA Super Cup and FIFA Club World Cup in a Los Blancos shirt.

The full-back won the World Cup with Spain in 2010, too, in between two triumphs at the Euros in 2008 and 2012.

After 238 appearances at Madrid, he left for the second time in 2016 and returned to the Premier League by signing for West Ham.

The decorated defender spent just one season in east London before retiring, and is now the manager of Madrid's Under-19 side.

It's been 16 years since he left Liverpool and it's a move that looks set to be replicated by Trent Alexander-Arnold in the summer.

The Reds right-back is out of contract at the end of the season and talkSPORT understands he has agreed to join Madrid.

Alexander-Arnold is on course to depart his boyhood club and do so after winning his second Premier League title.
