Liverpool are monitoring Real Madrid star Rodrygo Goes as a potential alternative transfer target if their primary pursuit of Newcastle United striker Alexander Isak does not materialize before the transfer window closes. Despite mounting an ambitious £120 million-plus bid for Isak, Newcastle have firmly refused to sell the Swedish international without securing a replacement, forcing Liverpool to consider other options.
Rodrygo, 24, has seen limited playing time at Real Madrid this summer under new manager Xabi Alonso, including minimal involvement in the Club World Cup, leading to dissatisfaction on the player's part. Following Liverpool’s loss of Luis Diaz to Bayern Munich, there is a clear need for a high-caliber forward who can step into a starting role, and Rodrygo's experience in the Champions League and La Liga makes him an intriguing option.
Though Liverpool have made no formal move yet and Real Madrid have not indicated willingness to sell, the Reds have reportedly initiated contact to inquire about Rodrygo's transfer situation. Spanish journalist Siro Lopez revealed that Liverpool had at least discussed potential terms with Real Madrid, highlighting Rodrygo's uncomfortable situation at Madrid as a factor that may facilitate a move.
As part of a significant attacking rebuild led by manager Arne Slot, Liverpool have already signed Florian Wirtz and Hugo Ekitike. Rodrygo could provide additional versatility and quality alongside these acquisitions. Last season, Rodrygo scored 16 goals and provided eight assists, numbers that could improve with more consistent playing time.
Meanwhile, Tottenham Hotspur have also expressed strong interest in Rodrygo, submitting a substantial offer reportedly close to Real Madrid’s valuation of €90 million, aiming to replace the outgoing Son Heung-min. However, Spurs face the challenge of convincing Rodrygo to join their project amid competing Premier League interest.
At present, Liverpool remain focused on their top target Isak but continue to keep Rodrygo on their radar as a promising option to strengthen their forward line this summer.
