Former Liverpool forward Robbie Keane believes his old club need to sign a centre-forward this summer as links to Alexander Isak continue.

The 25-year-old striker - signed by Newcastle United in August 2022 for a club record £63million - netted the winner against the Reds in the League Cup final at Wembley last season to earn his club their first domestic honour in 70 years.

But long before that goal at the home of English football, the Reds have been linked with a move for the Sweden international.

Isak scored 23 times in the Premier League last season and has also been linked with a move to Barcelona.

Keane’s claim comes at a time when both Darwin Nunez and Diogo Jota continue to be linked with moves away from Anfield during the upcoming summer transfer window.

Nunez started just eight Premier League games last season and has been linked with a move to Napoli, while clubs in Saudi Arabia have also expressed an interest in signing the Uruguay international.

Jota, on the other hand, started seven of the first eight Premier League games and had four goals and three assists in all competitions before being forced off early in the win against Chelsea in October.

He was sidelined for two months as a result of the injury before picking up another knock at the start of the year; however, he did return to play a role in helping his side become champions.

But Keane believes: “I think Liverpool need a striker.

I like Jota, he's a good player and he can play in different positions, but I definitely think they'll freshen things up.”

One player who has already made the move to Merseyside is Florian Wirtz, who joined the Reds from Bayer Leverkusen last week.

The Premier League champions have paid the Bundesliga giants £100m for the 22-year-old, but that fee could potentially become a British record as there are £16m of add-ons included.

If achieved, that would surpass the existing mark of £115m, which Chelsea paid for Moises Caicedo in 2023.

Liverpool beat off competition from Bayern, Manchester City and Real Madrid for the Germany international, and Keane believes that thanks to the attacker’s ability, he will have no problem fitting in at Anfield.

“Florian Wirtz is a wonderful player – very technical, very clever, he always picks the right pass and was brilliant under Xabi Alonso,” he told Betway.

“He’ll fit in no problem at Liverpool.

When you’ve got that quality, you’ll fit into that team, especially with how Liverpool play.

I think he’s a perfect fit for Liverpool.”

Liverpool finished last season 10 points clear of Arsenal, and former Republic of Ireland international Keane has thrown his backing behind his old club retaining their crown.

He said: “Liverpool will be my pick for the title again next season.
