Liverpool are considering a move to sign Real Madrid star Rodrygo if they are unable to complete a deal for Newcastle striker Alexander Isak.

Speaking on the latest edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, senior correspondent Pete O’Rourke revealed what sources have told him about the 24-year-old’s future at Real Madrid and his role in Xabi Alonso’s plans.

The Brazil international has been the focus of speculation this summer, but Alonso is keen to keep him at the Bernabeu despite interest from Liverpool and Arsenal.

Football Insider revealed on 13 June that Arsenal’s move for Rodrygo has collapsed as he is expected to remain at Madrid as a key part of Alonso’s side.

Arne Slot’s side, meanwhile, have put any move for the winger on the back-burner as they are putting all of their effort into completing a deal for Isak.

This comes as Football Insider revealed Real Madrid will demand Liverpool pay £100million for the winger – forcing them to prioritise other options.

Former Man United chief scout Mick Brown told Football Insider on 15 May that Liverpool are interested in signing Rodrygo if Luis Diaz leaves.

After the Colombia international made the switch to Bayern Munich, speculation about the Real Madrid star has ramped up yet again.

O’Rourke explained that while there is interest from Liverpool, the winger is not currently a priority and he is expected to remain with Los Blancos beyond the summer window.

“I think it’s unlikely as we stand right now,” he told Football Insider.

“All of Liverpool’s focus is on Alexander Isak, they’re prioritising that move and trying to get a deal done with Newcastle, which won’t be easy to do.

“The only way they could get Rodrygo is if they don’t land Isak, then maybe they will step up their interest in the Brazilian.

“Rodrygo’s position at Madrid has been the subject of speculation all summer, he barely played at the Club World Cup which has heightened the speculation.

“Xabi Alonso still is counting on Rodrygo and he’s a part of his plans.

“As it stands, Liverpool have put a deal for Rodrygo on the back-burner as they’re putting all of their efforts into signing Isak.

“If they were to get Isak, it would end their interest in Rodrygo.

“So as we stand right now, I expect Rodrygo to remain at Real Madrid.

But he is a world-beater and Liverpool will go for him if they can’t get Isak.”

Isak remains the top target for Liverpool this summer after his decision to push for a move away from Newcastle, as he made clear his desire to leave.

Football Insider revealed on 2 August that Liverpool plan to “shatter” the British transfer record in their attempts to land Isak with a new mega offer.

The Reds have already seen a bid of £110million rejected for the Sweden international, but remain hopeful of securing his signature with a fresh move lined up.

Football Insider revealed on 28 July that Liverpool are increasingly “confident” of signing Isak and are planning to lodge a new bid imminently.
