There has long been discussions over who is England’s top club.
Many will back their own team to be the best, but the trophy cabinets shows that Liverpool and Manchester United have been the two clubs that have been battling for ‘England’s top club’ for some time.
There is little that separates the two clubs, with Manchester United currently on 68 major trophies won, compared to Liverpool’s 67.
However, Liverpool’s six Champions League trophies compared to United’s three holds some weight in the argument of who really is England’s top club, especially with a record equalling 20th league title now within sight for Liverpool as well.
Gary Neville has waded in on the debate, labelling it as a sobering day if Liverpool were to win the title today.
The former Manchester United man can only watch on as Liverpool continue their upwards trajectory, and United continue to fall.
“It is a massive deal.
When you think of the importance of a league title, the managers at Liverpool and United always talk about your bread and butter being the league.
You could debate the most successful club when United were on 20.”
“Obviously Liverpool have more European Cups, but the painful thing to say is the debate is over for a period until United become successful again and win leagues.“
He explained the wider picture of Liverpool winning their 20th league title, highlighting the damage it should cause the United hierarchy, as the confirmation will act as a wake up call for them.
“It should cause real tremors at Old Trafford.
Liverpool will be the most successful club after today, and that should cause heartache and pain.”
“It took a lot to get ahead of Liverpool, and now that will be gone.”
Liverpool need just one point against Spurs to add another league title to their trophy cabinet and cement themselves as England’s top club.
