Liverpool were officially the Premier League's biggest spenders during the latest summer transfer window.

Arne Slot totted-up a £446m bill, inclusive of add-ons, as 10 new players entered the club over a three-month period.

The last to do so was Alexander Isak, signed from Newcastle United in a British-record £125m deal on deadline day, to follow up the arrivals of Florian Wirtz, Hugo Ekitike and Jeremie Frimpong, among others.

The one hiccup in their grand plan was the late collapse of a move for Marc Guehi.

Crystal Palace pulled the plug on the central defender's proposed £35m transfer to Liverpool in the final hours of the window, leaving that matter to be resolved later down the line.

A first opportunity for the Reds to land Guehi will come during the January transfer window.

This will offer his club a month to find a suitable replacement before deciding if they wish to sell their captain for a nominal fee before he leaves as a free agent next summer.

And that mid-season business period should, also, afford Slot the chance to make any other changes he may see fit.

Of course, the head coach has been able to kit out his squad with a revamp of the goalkeeping department, new starting full-backs, a new young central defender, an attacking midfielder and two attackers so, therefore, he may not envisage such major changes being needed so soon in the future.

However, at the same time, all Slot can do is react to the situation in front of him.

An injury crisis or player's change in heart, as examples, may be enough to force Liverpool back into the market.

After agreeing a fee with clubs, personal terms with a player and completing all of a transfer's formalities, one of the final parts of the process is a player receiving his new squad number.

Liverpool have seen the No.7 change hands from Luis Diaz to Wirtz, and the No.9 from Darwin Nunez to Isak over the summer months.

The eight other new arrivals took up numbers that were previously vacant.

But there have also been several outgoings this summer who have - in turn - vacated several shirt numbers.

As things stand, any January signings Liverpool may make, Guehi included, have the following numbers to choose from; 13, 16, 19, 21, 23, 24, 27, 29, 31, 32, 33, 34, 35, 36, 37, 39, 40.
