It would be fair to say that things aren’t going according to plan at Manchester United this summer.

The club have been embroiled in a summer-long pursuit of Barcelona midfielder Frenkie de Jong that doesn’t seem to be going anywhere, with that particular saga seemingly going on for years at this stage.

However, the last area Liverpool need to improve is in defence.

Elsewhere, the club’s list of deals they have actually managed to get over the line have been far from convincing to supporters.

Yet should Gvardiol stay at Leipzig for another couple of years (unlikely given the level of interest in him) then things could change for Liverpool, as Joël Matip and Virgil van Dijk would be a couple of years older and Liverpool would need to rejuvenate the back line.

Christian Eriksen, Lisandro Martinez and Tyrell Malacia are good signings, but they aren’t going to set pulses racing.
