Liverpool’s goalkeeping department has undergone significant changes ahead of the 2025–26 season.
Armin Pecsi arrived from Puskás Akadémia on a five-year contract for a reported fee of £1.5 million, bolstering the club’s youth ranks as a third-choice behind Alisson and newly signed Georgi Mamardashvili, who joins after a season-long loan at Valencia following a €30 million agreement.
Academy graduate Caoimhin Kelleher departed for Brentford, while senior coaches Fabian Otte and Claudio Taffarel both exited.
This prompted the return of Xavi Valero as head of first-team goalkeeping and the promotion of Colin Stewart to goalkeeper development lead
But one goalkeeper signing has gone under the radar, partly due to his role at Liverpool but also the fact that he was released and then resigned again this summer.
Despite being listed among the academy players released when his contract expired on 30 June 2025, 21-year-old Jacob Poytress has reappeared on Liverpool’s official website as a training goalkeeper for the U21s, a role focused on supporting coaching staff rather than on-field appearances
His understated re-signing – confirmed by his reappearance on the Liverpool website – carried no public announcement despite the club doing a 180 after initially deciding to let the youngster go.
The training-only contract mirrors the arrangement Oscar Kelly held in prior seasons, providing the first team with an additional goalkeeper during tours and injury crises.
Poytress will primarily participate in specialized coaching drills, simulate opposition attacking patterns in practice matches, and maintain readiness for emergency call-ups.
Supporters following the club’s retained list initially overlooked his retention, but one diligent fan tracked the academy page to see the addition to the U21 side.
With no official press release, Poytress’ quiet return has gone unnoticed until now.
The club describe him as:
“Jacob Poytress is a training goalkeeper with Liverpool FC U21s.”
“He was previously at Bury and Stalybridge Celtic before arriving at the Academy.”
“2025-26 will be Jacob’s third season with the Reds and he does a fantastic job supporting the goalkeepers and working with coaches Mark Morris and Neil Edwards.”
