Liverpool’s pursuit of Alexander Isak could see the Reds end their 10-year reluctance to buy a proven Premier League centre-forward.
The club have steered away from buying established strikers in the English top-flight since signing Christian Benteke from Aston Villa in 2015.
Newcastle United turned down Liverpool’s £110million offer for Isak, who scored 23 league goals last season, and the Reds currently do not plan to return with a second bid until the Magpies have signed a potential replacement.
However, the Reds are still working to bring in more players and a deal for Isak would be the first of its kind for Liverpool in a decade.
In 2015, Liverpool stumped up £32.5m to snap up Benteke from Aston Villa, where he had 49 goals in 101 games.
Since then, the club have not risked making the same mistake.
Benteke arrived in the same summer as Roberto Firmino, who proved to be a vital cog in the Liverpool attack that would later lead the Reds to Premier League and Champions League glory.
The same argument can be made regarding versatile forward Diogo Jota’s move from Wolves in 2020.

When the time came to sign a new centre-forward, the Reds opted to bring in Darwin Nunez from Benfica three years ago, rather than looking closer to home.
Meanwhile, Dominic Solanke joining Liverpool from Chelsea via a tribunal in 2017 is not comparable to Benteke’s high-profile transfer or Isak’s potential switch this summer.
Isak will not be involved in the club’s opening game against Aston Villa on Saturday.
