AFC Bournemouth chairman Bill Foley has praised the appointment of Richard Hughes as the incoming sporting director at Liverpool, claiming that they will continue to collaborate despite Hughes’ move to Merseyside.

Hughes was selected as the first appointment by Michael Edwards after Edwards assumed the role of CEO of Football for Liverpool’s owners, Fenway Sports Group (FSG).

Having resigned from his position as technical director at the Vitality Stadium at the close of 2023, he is set to begin his tenure at Anfield in June.

During his time at Bournemouth, the 44-year-old played a pivotal role in the club’s restructuring efforts and in establishing them as regular competitors in the Premier League.

He also demonstrated adeptness in player acquisitions and managerial appointments.

Reports suggest that Hughes and Edwards developed a close relationship during their time together at Fratton Park.

At Liverpool, Hughes will assume responsibility for sporting operations, succeeding Jorg Schmadtke, who departed following the confirmation of Jurgen Klopp’s forthcoming departure.

Working alongside Michael Edwards, Hughes will be entrusted with maintaining Liverpool’s competitive position at the summit of the Premier League and ensuring a successful return to the UEFA Champions League in their upcoming season.

“It’s a compliment to the club, that we have those kind of individuals working for the club that can move on to different situations and maybe do a little better financially at a club like Liverpool than they can at Bournemouth, because we’re a small club,” Foley told Sky Sports.

“Richard has been a great asset and a great ally.

I know we’ll still work together when he’s at Liverpool.

“He’s got his job to do and we have our job to do, but he will always be a friend to the club.

I applaud him, he’s a great man.”

Commenting on his new position with Liverpool, Hughes said: “I am incredibly proud to be offered this opportunity.

“Liverpool FC is a unique club and I’m grateful to be given a chance to serve it in this capacity.

“People rightly talk about the rich history this organisation can boast, but it is the present and future which really excites me.

“Jürgen Klopp is leading an outstanding team and squad and alongside that the commitment to young players and their pathway to the first team is also outstanding.

“I am fully aware of the expectations and responsibilities that come with taking this position.

“It will be my job, working with Michael [Edwards] and leading the football operations team already in place, plus the wider staff at the AXA Training Centre, to make good decisions.
