Liverpool midfielder Alexis Mac Allister confirmed he wasn't in attendance at Monday night's Ballon d'Or awards ceremony in Paris for 'personal reasons'.

His statement was published on Instagram quickly after it was confirmed he would not be crowned the men's footballer of the year.

The Argentine was shortlisted alongside some of his Reds team-mates, with Mohamed Salah, Virgil van Dijk and Florian Wirtz in the top 30 players for the prestigious individual prize, which is voted for by journalists from FIFA's top 100-ranked countries.

Mac Allister will not be alongside his colleagues and will remain on Merseyside instead.

This was announced in a brief statement shared in both Spanish and English to the Liverpool star's Instagram profile on Monday evening.

It read: "Won’t be able to attend @ballondorofficial ceremony today for personal reasons, all the best for everyone, enjoy!"

The 2022 World Cup winner and his partner, Ailen Cova, are shortly expecting their first child together.

After she was in attendance at last Wednesday's Champions League win over Atletico Madrid at Anfield, she posted a picture of herself holding her baby bump and smiling on her own Instagram profile with the message 'one more game'.

Liverpool then played Everton on Saturday, again at Anfield, with Mac Allister staring in Merseyside derby victory.

The final top 30 rankings for the Ballon d'Or began to be announced on social media in the hours before the ceremony starts.

Mac Allister was confirmed to have placed 22nd.

This was ahead of Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk, who finished 28th, and summer signing Florian Wirtz, who came in at 29th.

At present the top 10 are yet to be named and Mohamed Salah is still in the running for the award.

The Egyptian, who has never finished in the top three for the accolade, is anticipated to go up against Ousmane Dembele, Raphinha, and Lamine Yamal.

Goalkeeper Alisson Becker is up for the Yashin Trophy, given to the best goalkeeper of the year, whilst head coach Arne Slot is up for the Johan Cruyff Trophy, awarded to the best coach of the year.
