Harvey Elliott could play for Liverpool before the end of the season following successful surgery on the horror ankle injury the playmaker suffered against Leeds United, according to the Premier League club.

Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp has said that Elliott will be out for "a while" but it has now been suggested by the Merseyside club that the player might feature again before the end of the season.

"Club doctor Jim Moxon told Liverpool's official website:"Harvey sustained a fracture dislocation of his left ankle during the game.

"We were able to reduce the dislocation immediately on the pitch and Harvey had surgery today to repair the fracture and ligaments damaged in the incident. The operation was a success so his comeback starts now."

Reds boss Klopp said that Elliott has already accepted that there is no guarantee that his recovery will be completed quickly.

"I spoke to him right after the game, he was in the best possible place," Klopp told reporters on Tuesday before news of the 18-year-old's successful surgery.

Liverpool defender Virgil van Dijk suffered a season-ending injury in October last year and only returned during pre-season.
