19 Liverpool players have received international call-ups for June fixtures, granting minimal recovery time following the Premier League finale against Crystal Palace.
Key figures including Diogo Jota (Portugal) and Ibrahima Konate (France) face critical UEFA Nations League semi-finals on June 4-5, just nine days after their club campaign concluded.
This compressed timeline leaves players like Virgil van Dijk – set to feature in Netherlands’ qualifiers against Finland and Malta – with barely three weeks before Liverpool’s preseason training resumes on July 1.
It is starting to look like Arne Slot’s decision to basically write off the last month of the Premier League campaign as being a smart one.
The players were able to enjoy a break before international duty starts up again.
But one man who is not happy at not being on international duty is Alexis Mac Allister.
The Dutch manager omitted the Argentine from the last two games of the Premier League, citing the fact that Liverpool’s No.10 needed to “recover completely” after an intensive season.
The midfielder was expected to join Argentina for their World Cup qualifying matches against Chile and Colombia this week, but head coach Lionel Scaloni has omitted the former Brighton player from the Albiceleste squad due to fitness concerns.
And it’s fair to say that he has not taken it too kindly.
Speaking to local outlet TyC Sports, Mac Allister admitted that he was “infuriated” by the decision:
“Not being on the squad list infuriates me?
Sometimes it’s a question I ask myself every day, but I’ve had some issues throughout the year,” the 26-year-old said.
“It’s not a major injury, it’s a minor one, but it’s better to rest before it gets worse.”
“We have the World Cup very close.”
Mac Allister seems to suggest he is battling with a minor injury, and perhaps Slot also had that in mind when omitting him from the last two Premier League games this past season.
But his exclusion from national team selection for the matches against Chile and Colombia is logical given that Argentina have already secured their spot at next year’s World Cup in North America.
