Former Liverpool midfielder James Milner is interviewed by Pro: Direct Soccer(Image: Pro: Direct Soccer - YouTube)

James Milner has recalled how he jokingly confronted and threatened one Liverpool team-mate ahead of his first training session with the club.

The former Reds vice-captain moved to Anfield on a free transfer in the summer of 2015 after his contract with Man City expired.

He went on to win every major honour during eight years at Liverpool, making 332 appearances and returning 26 goals and 45 assists, before signing for Brighton & Hove Albion on a Bosman transfer in the summer of 2023.

The 39-year-old has missed the majority of the current campaign through injury, and has actually been sidelined for all five meetings against his former club since joining the Seagulls.

But having been 29 years old when he joined Liverpool back in 2015, he had faced off against the Reds on 24 occasions - winning only five - prior to his move to Anfield.

And it was one of these clashes that led to Milner having one of his new team-mates in his sights after joining the club.

The midfielder was on the books of Newcastle United broke his foot following a challenge from Lucas Leiva and was forced off just before half-time as Liverpool ran out 3-0 winners in March 2008.

And he revealed he made sure to remind Lucas of the challenge following his move to Anfield seven years later, jokingly warning him to ‘expect one’ back in training.

“I broke my foot when I was at Newcastle,” he recalled to Pro: Direct Soccer when asked if he had ever broken a bone.

“Lucas Leiva, I went to clear a ball and he came in with his studs and I broke my foot.

“He was a teammate a few years later so the first day I met him, I obviously reminded him of that one and told him to expect one in training!”

However, Milner recalled how playing with broken ribs during his time at Man City proved to be his most painful injury - with future Liverpool team-mate Kolo Toure even managing to make the injury worse in training after putting the midfielder ‘through a fence’.

“I broke two ribs when I was at City,” he said.
