The 22-year-old is set to undergo a medical on Friday ahead of completing his move to Anfield.

Having predominantly played as a number 10 for the Bundesliga outfit, Wirtz is expected to take up a similar role on Merseyside under Arne Slot.

And then there's Dominik Szoboszlai.

The Hungarian, who played an attacking midfielder for the majority of last year, has insisted he does not fear Wirtz's arrival as he looks to fight for his starting berth.

And following his comments, the ECHO's Liverpool writers have their say on what the Reds should do with Szoboszlai this season...

Dominik Szoboszlai emerged as a tactically invaluable tool for Arne Slot last season, with his tireless engine and powerful running becoming an important part of what the head coach was trying to achieve.

Slot's critique over a lack of goals and assists in Milan in mid-September, however, was not emphatically answered by Szoboszlai, even though the Hungary captain chipped in with eight apiece last time out.

And it was interesting to note that Slot made reference to Szoboszlai playing in his preferred position at Brighton last month when he was used a deeper role in the midfield.

That, for me, is where Szoboszlai is now going to compete for a place now alongside Curtis Jones, Alexis Mac Allister and Ryan Gravenberch.

That four-man contingent for the two places is strong department, with Wataru Endo continuing his specialist firefighter role and Wirtz and Elliott in the No.10 roles, in an ideal world.

Szoboszlai remains an important part of the operation, regardless of Wirtz's arrival.

When Dominik Szoboszlai arrived at Liverpool two years ago, much was made of his versatility as a player capable of operating in every position in midfield.

That became apparent during his debut campaign under Jurgen Klopp, and was also evident at times last season despite being told to concentrate on being a number 10 by new head coach Arne Slot.

Given Liverpool won the Premier League title, there's no doubt Slot's call was the correct one with Szoboszlai regularly making a contribution, if not quite delivering the numbers in terms of goals and assists that the position perhaps demands.

But it could be argued that with his strong engine, willingness to press and ability to play searching passes from deep, Szoboszlai is more a natural number eight than an attacking midfielder.

It means that he will now be a strong competitor for a start in all three regular midfield positions under Slot.

Liverpool might be spending £116m on a new attacking midfielder, but that will not spell the end of the Hungarian.

Throughout last season, Slot was criticised for not rotating his side more as he predominantly stuck to picking two from the trio of Szoboszlai, Alexis Mac Allister and Curtis Jones to line up alongside Ryan Gravenberch.

The arrival of Wirtz will ultimately enable lessen the load on the aforementioned engine-room options, with Szoboszlai capable of playing at both number 10 and number eight.

Slot actually used the midfielder in a deeper midfield role against Brighton last season as he admitted Szoboszlai prefers lining up at number eight.

Against lesser opposition at Anfield, he could even be stationed alongside Mac Allister at number six, with Gravenberch the man afforded a rest.

Alternatively, Slot also has the option of playing either Wirtz or Szoboszlai as a false nine, one in front of the other, or even field both as number 10s in a box midfield.

While Szoboszlai was predominantly a number 10 last season, expect the arrival of Wirtz to result in Slot making full use of the Hungarian's versatility rather than come at his expense, with the option to rotate his hand more only strengthening Liverpool's efforts to challenge on multiple fronts.
