Liverpool maintained their perfect start to the Premier League season with a 2-1 victory over Everton in a tense Merseyside derby, extending David Moyes’ miserable record at Anfield.

Ryan Gravenberch opened the scoring in the 10th minute, guiding home Mohamed Salah’s majestic delivery for the Reds’ earliest home goal since September 2023.

Gravenberch, restored to midfield alongside Dominik Szoboszlai and Alexis Mac Allister in a more balanced three-man unit, at the expense of benched summer signing Florian Wirtz, then turned provider, sliding through Hugo Ekitike to notch his fourth Liverpool goal since joining in the summer.

Alexander Isak came on for the final 20 minutes to mark his league debut, though he wasn’t needed to secure the result.

Everton rallied after the break, halving the deficit through a thunderous Idrissa Gueye volley, created by the lively Jack Grealish, arguably the Toffees’ standout performer.

The closing stages were fraught and nervy, but Moyes’ side lacked the cutting edge to find an equaliser.

The win means Liverpool have now won five consecutive Premier League games for the first time under Arne Slot.

Gravenberch, who played a starring role with a goal and an assist, was named Premier League Player of the Matchweek after topping the fan vote with 31 percent.

Speaking to TNT Sports pitchside after the game, Gravenberch said: “I’m really happy with the goal.

“Last season I didn’t score a lot, so I’m happy that I could score.

Especially in the Merseyside derby as well.

“We know if Mo has got the ball, he has an incredible pass.

“We know if someone is on the ball side, they have to go through and the space is coming behind.

I saw it and I went in behind… and I did a thing!

“Now we are top of the league and it’s always nice to win a Merseyside derby?

I’m really happy, going to recover and we keep going on Tuesday.”

The Dutch midfielder has now been rewarded with a place in the EA SPORTS FC Team of the Week.
