Liverpool made it five wins from five as their flawless defence of the Premier League crown continued with a Merseyside derby victory over Everton at Anfield on Saturday.

Arne Slot’s side seized early control when Ryan Gravenberch produced a clever lofted finish from Mohamed Salah’s pass to open the scoring after just 10 minutes.

The Netherlands midfielder turned provider before the half-hour mark, sliding in Hugo Ekitike, who beat Everton goalkeeper Jordan Pickford with a composed low strike.

Liverpool’s depth was underlined by the fact that big-money summer arrivals Florian Wirtz and Alexander Isak, signed for a combined £241million, both started on the bench and only entered the fray in the second half.

Everton grew into the contest after the break and halved the deficit on 58 minutes.

Jack Grealish’s cross picked out Iliman Ndiaye at the far post, and the forward teed up Idrissa Gueye, who rifled a powerful drive beyond Alisson.

The visitors pressed for an equaliser, but Liverpool’s early dominance proved decisive as Slot’s men preserved their perfect start to the season.

Ryan Gravenberch has been named Premier League Player of the Matchweek after starring in Liverpool’s Merseyside derby win over Everton.

He topped the vote with 31 percent, beating seven other nominees.

Speaking to TNT Sports pitchside, Gravenberch said: “I’m really happy with the goal.

“Last season I didn’t score a lot, so I’m happy that I could score.

Especially in the Merseyside derby as well.

“We know if Mo has got the ball, he has an incredible pass.

“We know if someone is on the ball side, they have to go through and the space is coming behind.

I saw it and I went in behind… and I did a thing!

“Now we are top of the league and it’s always nice to win a Merseyside derby?

I’m really happy, going to recover and we keep going on Tuesday.”
