Liverpool could soon line up with both Alexander Isak and Hugo Ekitike in their attack, according to Jermaine Pennant.

However, the talkSPORT host has warned another Reds forward he could lose his place if he fails to perform for Arne Slot's side.

The Liverpool boss saw both of his summer signings score in a 2-1 victory over Southampton in the Carabao Cup on Tuesday night.

Isak grabbed his first goal for the club before being replaced by Ekitike at half-time.

The Frenchman capped off an impressive second half display with the winning goal only to be shown a second yellow card for taking his shirt of in celebration.

Although he will miss Saturday's trip to Crystal Palace, Ekitike will be available again for the Champions League clash with Galatasaray next week.

Pennant believes Slot may deploy the former Eintracht Frankfurt strike in a different role in order to play him alongside Isak if they maintain their scoring form.

However, he has warned this could see Cody Gakpo lose his place in the starting line-up.

The former Reds winger responded to a Liverpool fan's concerns over keeping both strikers happy on The Sports Bar after Tuesday's win.

Pennant explained: "Only one of them really is an out-and-out number nine and that is Isak.

"You look at Ekitike for Frankfurt, he also drifted out and played on the left.

"So out of those front three players, I think that the one who should be worried if he is not performing on a regular basis is Gakpo.

"Because if he starts dipping then I think Slot will go, ‘do you know what?

So let's maybe try that if Gakpo is not playing.’

"So if they're both on fire and Gakpo's not, I think we may see Ekitike drift out (wide)."

Ekitike has previously appeared on the left wing as well as behind the striker in his career.

Since his arrival at Anfield, the 23-year-old has already scored five goals in eight appearances for the club.

Meanwhile, Isak has now opened his account following his British record £125million move from Newcastle.

The Swedish international has so far played just 126 minutes for his new club with only two starts to his name.

As for Gakpo, he had started all seven matches across all competitions prior to the cup victory over the Saints.

However, he has scored just once and added two assists in those appearances.
