Milos Kerkez may be worrying about his place in the Liverpool starting XI following a poor performance vs Newcastle United on Monday.

The Reds won the Alexander Isak grudge match 3-2 at St.

James’ Park, but didn’t exactly make life easy for themselves after allowing 10-man Newcastle to claw back a 2-0 deficit.

Kerkez was particularly culpable for Newcastle’s first goal, not even attempting to jump with Bruno Guimaraes as the Brazilian headed home a Tino Livramento cross.

The Hungarian’s efforts – or lack of – didn’t exactly go down well with the Liverpool fans, with one even saying his start to life at Anfield is making him ‘appreciate’ Andy Robertson more.

As well as his poor defending on Newcastle’s first goal — which was counted as an error by FotMob — Kerkez‘s stats from Monday night make for worrying reading.

The former Bournemouth man failed to make a single interception or create a chance, while he was unsuccessful with all five of his attempted long passes and the one cross he tried to put into the Newcastle box.

Kerkez did make some defensive interventions, managing two tackles and six clearances — but most of the latter came when Newcastle were piling on the pressure in search of equalising and winning goals.

Alongside the above Liverpool fan, others of a Red persuasion are calling for Robertson to be brought back into the starting XI as soon as possible — starting with Sunday’s early-season title clash at home to Arsenal.

Football Insider verdict

Kerkez was superb for Bournemouth last season, with two goals and five assists just the tip of the iceberg in terms of the quality he brought for Andoni Iraola.

However, it’s not been an ideal start to life at Anfield, with the 22-year-old also looking shaky against his former club on the opening weekend of the season.

Next up is a huge clash against Arsenal.

Bukayo Saka looks set to miss that match through injury, but even then, any one of Noni Madueke, Leandro Trossard, Ethan Nwaneri or Eberechi Eze could fill the England international’s role to devastating effect.

The Premier League title certainly won’t be won or lost on matchday three, but the defending champions will be desperate to put down an early marker against one of their closest rivals.
