Cody Gakpo made his mark as three members of Liverpool’s Dutch contingent were involved in an historic moment for the Netherlands.

Arne Slot has led a Dutch revolution at Anfield since taking charge last summer, with Gakpo, Virgil van Dijk and Ryan Gravenberch all integral to Liverpool’s Premier League title success in his debut season.

Liverpool have added further to their crop of Netherlands internationals this summer with the £30million signing of Jeremie Frimpong from Bayer Leverkusen, as part of Slot’s huge squad overhaul at Anfield.

The additions of Florian Wirtz, Hugo Ekitike and Alexander Isak for a British record transfer fee had cast Gakpo‘s starting place into doubt, but the 26-year-old has responded with a goal and two assists so far this season.

Gakpo was a key figure in Liverpool’s Premier League title win

Gakpo has admitted that he held talks with Bayern Munich over a potential transfer in the summer amid speculation over his Liverpool future, but the German side opted to sign his team-mate Luis Diaz instead.

Back on the continent for the international break before Liverpool begin their campaign in the Champions League, Gakpo’s assist for the Oranje’s first goal against Lithuania saw Memphis Depay make history.

Gakpo’s cut-back for Depay provided the goal which saw the Vasco Da Gama forward overtake Robin van Persie as the Oranje’s top scorer, and he posted on Instagram after Depay netted again in a 3-2 win.

The Liverpool forward’s post said: “History made.

Congrats to the legend Memphis Depay on becoming the all-time top scorer.

When you walk in faith, greatness follows.”

The absent Frimpong and unused Oranje substitute Gravenberch both liked Gakpo’s post, while Depay replied to say: “Thank you Brodie!

Let’s go for more together”.

Football Insider Verdict

With Slot in the dugout, Van Dijk wearing the armband and Frimpong, Gravenberch and Gakpo all playing in key positions, Liverpool’s title defence will be hugely dependent on their Dutch contingent this season.

Liverpool’s failure to sign Marc Guehi on deadline day leaves their centre-back stocks thin behind Van Dijk and Ibrahima Konate, while Gravenberch is still arguably their only out-and-out defensive midfielder.

Frimpong and Conor Bradley now have an increasingly versatile Dominik Szoboszlai to compete with at right-back, and with Slot unlikely to change Liverpool’s formation to accomodate both Isak and Ekitike, the left wing spot is Gakpo’s to lose.
