James Milner has continued to push the boundaries of a Premier League footballer as his former club Liverpool do the same in the transfer market.
Liverpool released Milner upon the end of his contract in 2023 and he joined Brighton in a surprise free transfer, bucking the trend of the Seagulls’ policy to sign up-and-coming players from around the world.
Milner’s exit preceded a midfield overhaul at Anfield which saw the arrivals of Alexis Mac Allister, Dominik Szoboszlai, Wataru Endo and Ryan Gravenberch, and a similar transformation has taken place in 2025.
Liverpool have spent close to £300millon and counting on new signings this summer and smashed their transfer record on Florian Wirtz from Bayer Leverkusen, but that record is set to be beaten once more.
Alexander Isak’s signing from Newcastle is imminent as Liverpool prepare to surpass their record for the second time in 73 days, with his £125million move also set to become the highest fee in British history.

With Liverpool taking huge strides in the transfer market, beating Arsenal 1-0 on Sunday, and seeing Man City suffer a 2-1 defeat at Brighton, Arne Slot’s side are well placed in their Premier League title defence.
Milner is yet to come back to haunt Liverpool since his departure in 2023, but that’s exactly what he did to another one of his former clubs on with his first Brighton goal in their win over Man City at the Amex.

The 39-year-old’s penalty beat James Trafford in the 67th minute before Brajan Gruda won it for the Seagulls a minute before full-time, as Milner came the oldest spot-kick scorer in Premier League history.
Milner posted on Instagram after the victory, and said: “Great fight showed by everyone for a big three points.
Happy to get on the scoresheet and delighted for Brajan Gruda scoring an amazing winning goal”.
Andrew Robertson and Jordan Henderson were just two of Milner’s former team-mates to respond, as both posted ‘heart’ emojis alongside the Scot calling him a “legend”.

Football Insider Verdict
Milner is now the second-oldest and second-youngest Premier League goalscorer after his strike as a 16-year-old for Leeds against Sunderland back in 2002, and he has Teddy Sheringham‘s record in sight.
Man City’s back-to-back defeats to Tottenham and Brighton leaves them six points behind Liverpool in the Premier League title race already, as Liverpool strengthen their squad even further with record fees.
Marc Guehi and Isak‘s arrivals will take Liverpool’s summer outlay close to an eye-watering £500million, but if their rebuild delivers another dominant league title win, every single penny will have been worth it.
