Andy Robertson has hailed Liverpool’s Carabao Cup progression despite seeing his warning for his teammates fall on deaf ears.

The Reds booked their spot in the fourth round of the competition as they squeezed past Championship side Southampton at Anfield.

As has become customary for Arne Slot’s side this season, it required another late show from the Reds to secure victory.

Liverpool’s latest win comes after Robertson had warned his teammates to tighten up amid their late shows.

Speaking after the Reds’ dramatic victory over Atletico Madrid - a game in which they let a 2-0 lead slip - he said: ”I think we need to maybe get back to winning a bit simpler and a bit easier.

“Obviously it’s a great thing to have been able to keep going right to the end but when you’re 2-0 up and you’re playing so well in the first half, it should have been a more comfortable night.”

Away from Liverpool’s progression, Robertson also gave his verdict on Ekitike’s dismissal.

The Frenchman was sent off after taking his shirt off while celebrating, having already picked up a prior booking.

"I'll be very surprised if he does it again," Robertson said to Sky Sports.

Robertson’s assessment of the striker’s red card was very similar to that of Liverpool boss Arne Slot.

Speaking after Tuesday evening’s game, Slot said: "Needless?

I never played at this level but did score a few goals and if I scored a goal like this, I'd have turned around and walked up to Federico Chiesa and said, 'This goal is all about you, this is not about me'.

"It's always best to control your emotions.
