Liverpool have begun to formalise their interest in Alexander Isak.
The Newcastle striker remains high on the Anfield club’s wish list in their search for a new established centre forward ahead of the new season.
Isak previously scored in four of his six outings against Arne Slot’s side including the winning goal in the previous campaign’s Carabao Cup final.
Although the Magpies are intent on holding onto the Sweden international, they are pursuing Eintracht Frankfurt’s Hugo Ekitike as a long-term successor.
A club-record bid of £70 million was rejected by the Bundesliga outfit on Tuesday for the forward, who is also among the Reds’ preferred targets.
Should Newcastle continue to hold firm on Isak, Liverpool are likely to enter the race for Ekitike at their Premier League counterparts’ likely expense.
However any move is likely to be dependent on the futures of Luis Diaz and Darwin Nunez with the South American duo expected to leave this summer.
Bayern Munich have already seen an opening bid in the region of £56M rejected for the Colombia international, who remains open to a departure.
Nunez, meanwhile, continues to draw interest from Serie A champions Napoli.
