Liverpool and their ambitious quest to sign Florian Wirtz is reaching its conclusion after Bayer Leverkusen rejected a second improved bid of €130 million (£109.4 million) and holding firm on their €150 million (£126.2 million) valuation for the German playmaker.
Despite the stalemate, negotiations continue with renewed urgency as both clubs aim to resolve the transfer before Germany’s Nations League campaign concludes this week.
It’s clear Bayer Leverkusen aim to extract maximum value for their 22-year-old talisman, and rightfully so as he is a generational talent.
German outlet BILD has reported that Wirtz has a deal agreed with Liverpool through until 2030 – making it a five-year contract on Merseyside.
According to the same report, FSG CEO of Football Michael Edwards has already secured approval from the club’s Boston-based owners to meet Leverkusen’s full €150 million asking price.
Joshua Kimmich, the player’s captain with the German national team, seemingly confirmed that Wirtz is Anfield bound in a press conference on Monday:
“He will have his reasons for making this decision?
I hope it’s the right path for him,” the Bayern Munich man said.
“As a Bayern player, I would have naturally wanted him to come to us.”
And while all signs point towards the Reds completing the deal, a fresh concern has now raised.
BILD (via WerkselfXtra) have now reported that there is some concern in England over Wirtz playing in the UEFA Nations League games coming up for Germany.
The Germans face Portugal in the Nations League semi-final on Wednesday night, and the Anfield club do not want an injury to derail the transfer:
“Bayer Leverkusen are taking a relaxed approach to Florian Wirtz playing/not playing in Germany’s game against Portugal tomorrow and have not specifically sought dialogue with the DFB, despite the risk that an injury could affect the deal with Liverpool FC,” BILD reported.
“It is assumed that Wirtz will play because B04 know how important the Nations League is to the DFB – if it were an insignificant game, the situation would probably be different.”
“However, the whole issue is also a major topic of discussion in England.”
It would certainly be a very disappointing reason for the transfer to materialize, and it seems Liverpool are not entirely happy with the situation.
For now, both clubs and supporters must hold their breath and hope that the 22-year-old emerges unscathed from international duty.
