Liverpool remain next-to-bottom of the Under-18 Premier League North after another hugely disappointing showing in defeat at Blackburn Rovers.

The home side were far too strong for the young Reds, who were sent tumbling to a heavy 5-0 defeat on Saturday afternoon.

Marc Bridge-Wilkinson's side ended the game with 10 men after Louis Enahoro-Marcus was sent off following an altercation on the byline with Blackburn substitute Stephen Edmondson, which sparked a melee involving players from both teams.

The U18s came from two goals down to avoid defeat in their previous two games, but, in front of watching former Liverpool winger Steve McManaman, there was no chance of a repeat.

Liverpool had started the game encouragingly with both Josh Sonni-Lambie and makeshift right-back Scofield Lonmeni firing wide.

But Blackburn's superior power and physicality soon became apparent, and they were ahead on the half-hour when the impressive Jayden Sergent crossed from the left for Aaron Potter to score from close range.

Reds goalkeeper Bailey Hall made a string of fine saves either side of half-time, but the visitors conceded again on 61 minutes when Edmondson finished at the far post with Liverpool unable to defend a simple set-piece routine.

Enahoro-Marcus was sent off shortly afterwards when reacting unwisely to a shirt pull from Edmondson and appearing to push the Blackburn player in the face.

And the young Reds subsequently fell apart, with Sergent scoring on 77 minutes and then assisting a Valentine Joseph free header on 88 minutes before the unfortunate Emmanuel Arioboma put through his own net during injury time.

Liverpool are next in U18 Premier League North action on Saturday when they travel to Newcastle United (kick-off 11am).
