Liverpool's summer transfer window was rather lacklustre compared to the rest of the Premier League's big six - but it could have been increasingly better had they not backed out of a deal to sign Lorenzo Pellegrini of Roma.

Injuries to to star men Virgil van Dijk and Joe Gomez massively impacted their season as Jurgen Klopp's men relinquished control of the Premier League title to Manchester City.

It has been common knowledge for a while that Klopp has been looking for a midfielder.

A deal for Roma's Pellegrini almost occurred last season, but despite the tensions it reportedly caused in the Italian capital, Pellegrini stayed under the promise of Jose Mourinho.

According to Calciomercato, the midfielder's talks with his hometown club hit a tense stage when Liverpool and Barcelona came calling.

The Italian midfielder, who has been at the club since he was 11, was reportedly subject to interest from Liverpool over the summer months.

After causing a ruckus at the Stadion Olimpico, Liverpool backed out of a deal after realising a deal was not going to happen for Pellegrini.
