Florian Wirtz

Florian Wirtz has admitted he was blown away by the joyous scenes that followed Liverpool being crowned Premier League champions.

The Reds confirmed on Friday evening that they have completed the signing of the playmaker for what could be a British record fee.

The Premier League champions have paid Bayer Leverkusen £100million for the 22-year-old, but that fee could potentially become a British record as there are £16m of add-ons included.

If achieved, that would surpass the existing mark of £115m, which Chelsea paid for Moises Caicedo in 2023.

Liverpool were officially crowned champions when they hammered Tottenham Hotspur 5-1 at the end of April; they then lifted the famous trophy on the final day of the season following a 1-1 draw with Crystal Palace at Anfield.

Although this was the second championship the Reds have won in the last five years, it was the first to be lifted in front of supporters since 1990 due to Covid restrictions in 2020.

The streets around Anfield before kick-off against both Spurs and the Eagles were a sea of red, while those inside and across the city partied long and hard into the night on both days.

Thousands then took to the streets on the Bank Holiday Monday following the Palace game as Liverpool’s players took part in an open-top bus parade.

Asked about the scenes, Wirtz said: “I was just happy for the players here to live it, the moment, and also for the people here.

"I think it was well deserved because they played an unbelievable season.

So yeah, that sure gives motivation to achieve more.”

Leverkusen had initially wanted €150m (£127.6m) for the Germany international, who also attracted interest from Bayern Munich, Real Madrid and Manchester United, but weeks of talks led to a deal being agreed.

And Wirtz has already set his sights on winning silverware, admitting: “I would like to win everything every year!

Last season they won the Premier League, so my goal is for sure to win it again and also to go further in the Champions League.

I'm really excited.”

Speaking in an interview with LFCTV, Wirtz had one final message for Liverpool supporters.

He said: “I would say thank you for the support.
