Matt Beard, the former Liverpool Women’s football manager, has died at the age of 47. Beard had two spells managing Liverpool Women, from 2012 to 2015 and from 2021 to early 2025. He was highly regarded both for his success and his character, being remembered as a person of integrity and warmth by those who worked with him at the club.
Beard’s first spell at Liverpool was marked by back-to-back Women’s Super League titles in 2013 and 2014, achievements that included leading Liverpool to their first-ever UEFA Women’s Champions League campaign. After leaving Liverpool, he managed several other teams including Chelsea Women, Boston Breakers in the USA, West Ham United Women, Bristol City Women, and most recently Burnley Women.
On returning to Liverpool in 2021, Beard successfully guided the team to promotion back to the Women’s Super League in his first season, winning the FA Women’s Championship emphatically. He parted ways with Liverpool Women in February 2025. In June 2025, he was appointed manager of Burnley Women but resigned in August shortly before his death.
Liverpool Football Club expressed deep shock and sadness at his sudden passing, extending condolences to his family and friends. His legacy includes both his trophy-winning achievements and the respect he earned as a committed and successful manager throughout his career.
