Fenway Sports Group (FSG) mistakenly told Liverpool fans that they had secured the signing of Clint Dempsey back in 2012, only for the player to eventually sign with Tottenham.
Consequently, FSG endeavoured to finalise a deal for Dempsey, with Rodgers even suggesting a straight swap between the American and Liverpool's club captain, Jordan Henderson.
However, the hitch was that Henderson was not open to a move to West London.
I think they'd already spent a lot of money on Jordan Henderson and Andy Carroll, so they were looking to try to figure out a way for someone who was a little bit older - maybe it made sense to be more of a trade," reports the Mirror.
The now 42-year-old added: "I think I would've fit their style – or more so, Brendan Rodgers' style because I was an inverted winger, right?
I played on the left, I'd come in on my right foot, kind of like what I did at Fulham.

"But Jordan Henderson didn't want to make that change, and it ended up being the best move for him.
But it was pretty close to happening, it just wasn't meant to be."

Meanwhile, Henderson has also opened up about his struggles, confessing that he was plunged into "a very dark place" by the uncertainty over his Liverpool future.

Remaining faithful to Anfield until 2023, Henderson clinched both the Premier League and Champions League titles before making a lucrative switch to Al-Ettifaq.
