One Liverpool target has officially announced his decision to leave his present club at the end of the season.
Liverpool’s desire to sign a striker this summer is well documented.
Arne Slot is expected to tweak his current squad a bit, and Darwin Nunez and Diogo Jota could be the casualties.
Both players have endured indifferent seasons in front of goal, resulting in Slot playing winger Luis Diaz through the middle.
Jota initially had a good return at the beginning of the season?
But a few inury niggles has hampered his season and his output, with the Portuguese international making just 36 appearances for Liverpool in all competitions this season, scoring nine times and assisting four.
Meanwhile, despite being fit throughout the season, Nunez has been limited to 17 starts for Liverpool this season, scoring seven goals and registering seven assists in 45 appearances in all competitions.
Liverpool intend to sell one or both of them, and one player that has been linked as a potential replacement is Jonathan David.
The Canadian international have been linked with a move to Anfield for some time now.
In January, David Ornstein confirmed that Liverpool were interested in him, while a follow-up report in January claimed the club had sent in a bid for the 25-year-old.
While a deal did not materialise in January, the Reds are said to have remained keen and are looking to take advantage of the fact that the 25-year-old will become a free agent this summer.
And now, with this season nearing its end and the summer transfer window set to open in a few weeks, David himself has officially announced he will leave Lille this summer.
“Every story has a beginning and an end,” the forward said in a video posted on his Instagram page.
“I wanted to tell you myself that, after many years at the club, it is time for me to say goodbye.”
David has scored 109 goals in 231 games for Lille, including 25 in 48 appearances this season.
Having joined Gent in 2020, David helped Lille beat perennial champions PSG to the French league title in 2020-21.
He is set to play his last game for Lille in their final Ligue 1 match of the season against Reims on Saturday.
