Liverpool supporters were left disappointed on Sunday after seeing Crystal Palace pip them to the Community Shield.

Although it is, in essence, a glorified friendly match, it is never nice to miss out in a penalty shootout.

Furthermore, there was general concern from Liverpool fans about how their team played at Wembley.

The Reds were heavy favourites to beat Palace and although they played some nice stuff in the early parts of the game, they soon let it drift.

After Hugo Ekitike was substituted to protect him from injury, Liverpool lacked any real threat at the top of the pitch.

Explosive teenager Rio Ngumoha could have changed that, but remained rooted to the bench.

Having had such an impressive pre-season, fans had been hoping to see Ngumoha at Wembley, and they will be hoping his lack of inclusion is not a sign of things to come.

He may not have seen the pitch on Sunday, but Liverpool rate Ngumoha extremely highly.

So good do they think the 16-year-old can be, that the Reds are not planning to sign Bradley Barcola from PSG in the hopes of keeping the pathway to the first XI clear for Ngumoha.

And according to journalist David Lynch, the word from ‘behind the scenes’ at Liverpool is that Ngumoha is going to play more than people might think.

“They think Ngumoha’s going to be absolutely incredible, and you’ve just got to open up a path to minutes for him,” Lynch told Anfield Index.

“If he ends up in a situation where he’s just riding the bench until the odd League Cup minutes here and there, he’s possibly not going to fulfil his potential.

Personally I don’t think that works.

“I think we’re going to see Ngumoha more than people expect this season.

So, if that’s the case and they think he’s ready to do that then signing Barcola wouldn’t make a whole lot of sense.”

Part of the reason Liverpool fans are so keen to see more of Ngumoha is because they have a real lack of other options in attack just now.

Liverpool are pushing to sign Alexander Isak, but are not yet certain to end up with the Sweden striker.

Barcola has been named as an alternative target to Isak, but according to Lynch, there is no current negotiation with PSG over the 22-year-old.

“Liverpool absolutely like the player, but in terms of a move for him this window, I would be surprised,” he says.
