David Woodfine will return to Liverpool in the role of assistant sporting director as the new structure at Anfield continues to take shape.

Woodfine was the club’s director of loan management prior to his exit after nine years of service in May 2023.

However, he has been brought back into the fold by Fenway Sports Group’s CEO of football Michael Edwards as Liverpool prepare for the post Jurgen Klopp era.

Woodfine will be the assistant to new sporting director Richard Hughes, who is currently serving his notice period at Bournemouth.

Hughes is bringing chief scout Mark Burchill and scout Craig McKee with him from the south coast outfit.

The Athletic recently revealed that FSG are also set to recruit Benfica technical director Pedro Marques as they look to bolster their football operations prior to purchasing a second club in Europe.

Woodfine initially joined Liverpool in 2014 as scouting and recruitment coordinator and went on to become head of football projects and scouting operations three years later. In 2020, he was promoted to the role of director of loan management and impressed prior to deciding to take a break from football last summer.

Woodfine worked alongside Edwards at Portsmouth where he was a performance analyst between 2005 and 2010. During that period Hughes was a player at Portsmouth and now the trio will be reunited at Anfield.
