Liverpool could offer Tyler Morton a new contract before letting him leave on loan for the coming season amid growing interest.

Speaking on the latest edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, former England goalkeeper Paul Robinson explained that the 22-year-old is open to leaving Anfield after struggling to break into the first-team squad at Anfield.

However, with his deal set to expire at the end of the upcoming season, he could commit to new terms before spending the season away on loan.

West Ham have been linked with signing Morton this summer to bolster their midfield as Graham Potter aims to add to his squad before the window closes.

The midfielder remained at Liverpool last season rather than leaving on loan, but made just five senior appearances and played 261 minutes across all competitions.

As a result, he is set to make a decision about his future under Arne Slot and whether he may be better served playing an improved role elsewhere.

This article contains exclusive comment from Paul Robinson, a football pundit and former England, Tottenham and Leeds goalkeeper.

Football Insider revealed last July that Liverpool are open to letting Morton leave, but he would command a “significant” fee – with the same plan in place this year.

As a result, he could instead leave the club on loan after previous spells in the Championship with Blackburn Rovers and Hull City.

Robinson explained that Liverpool’s “extortionate” spending this summer has increased the likelihood that the midfielder will seek a route out of Anfield.

“I think he’s the type of player the club would begrudgingly allow to leave,” he told Football Insider.

“Tyler Morton is 22 now and you look at the competition for places in his position, he’s had loans at Blackburn and at Hull City.

“His contract expires at the end of this season, so whether it would be a new contract and a loan deal, it will be an interesting one to keep an eye on.

“For Liverpool, we’ve seen the extortionate amount of money they’ve spent, breaking into the squad with game time and minutes is getting extremely hard for the younger players.

“Morton, at 22 years old, is at a point in his career now where he’s thinking ‘do I want to be part of a Liverpool squad who are challenging for all honours and maybe play a handful of minutes, or is now the time to go somewhere and play every week?’

“I think that’s what he will be looking at, and it’s now time for him to go elsewhere and excel.“

Morton is not the only midfielder on the fringes of Slot’s squad who could leave Anfield before the transfer deadline amid speculation about Stefan Bajcetic.

Robinson told Football Insider on 1 August that Celtic want to sign Bajcetic and could complete a loan-to-buy deal within “the next few days”.

Brendan Rodgers had been keen to bring players in before their season opener against St Mirren on 3 August and deals are expected to accelerate in the near future.

Football Insider revealed on 22 July that Celtic want to sign a new central midfielder as Rodgers aims to improve the spine of his team in the transfer market.
