Liverpool are set to complete the signing of Jeremie Frimpong from Bayer Leverkusen, talkSPORT understands.

The Dutch full-back has agreed a five-year deal with the Reds through to the summer of 2030.

Frimpong is now expected to undergo a medical before finalising his move to Anfield.

Meanwhile, Liverpool have informed Leverkusen of their intentions to trigger the defender's £29.5million [€35m] release clause.

It comes after the Netherlands international was an unused substitute away to Mainz on Saturday afternoon in their final league fixture.

He had previously appeared in all 33 of the club's previous Bundesliga matches this season.

Liverpool had previously launched an approach for Frimpong 12 months ago before he was convinced to stay by Xabi Alonso.

However, the Reds' prior interest smoothened the negotiations this time around with the former Celtic man already keen on the move to Anfield.

They had also faced serious competition for his signature, with interest from Manchester City, Real Madrid, Barcelona and Manchester United.

But fellow Dutchman Arne Slot proved key in convincing him to join the club.

The deal will be the Liverpool coach's first signing of the summer and just his third since becoming Reds boss.

Federico Chiesa and Giorgi Mamardashvili both secured moves to Merseyside ahead of the current campaign.

However, the latter remained on loan at Valencia and will join up with the Reds ahead of next term.

Meanwhile, Frimpong is seen as a direct replacement for the departing Trent Alexander-Arnold.

After 21 years with the club, the England international will leave when his contract expires this summer.

Alexander-Arnold confirmed his exit last week after helping his side win the Premier League this season.

The right-back is expected to join Real Madrid on a free transfer after agreeing terms on a five-year deal.

His final home match will come against Crystal Palace at Anfield on May 25.

Liverpool will also be presented with the Premier League trophy after clinching their 20th title.

Slot's side were confirmed as champions with four matches remaining following a home victory over Tottenham last month.

As for Frimpong, the 24-year-old has been a key part of Leverkusen's recent success under Alonso.

He was part of the side which won an unbeaten league and cup double last term.

Since joining the German club in 2021, Frimpong has scored 30 goals and added 44 assists in 190 appearances.

His spell in the Bundesliga followed a year-and-a-half at Celtic, having signed from Manchester City in 2019.

Frimpong had previously spent nine years in City's academy without making a first-team appearance.

Despite not featuring for the club, his time in their youth system means Frimpong will count as a homegrown player for Liverpool.
