The Community Shield always marks the start of a new season.

It’s the first taste of competitive football after the summer.

It also gives fans a look at how ready their team is.

Some treat it as just another friendly, but there’s silverware on the line—and bragging rights too.

For Liverpool fans, it brings back memories of mixed fortunes.

They’ve won it, lost it on penalties, and had good battles with big rivals.

This time around, it’s a fresh opponent.

Not the usual Manchester City, Chelsea or Arsenal.

Something about this one feels different.

It’s also a chance to add another trophy to the club’s collection and send a message before the new campaign begins.

This year’s Community Shield will see Liverpool take on Crystal Palace at Wembley Stadium on Saturday, August 9.

It comes after the Reds cruised to the Premier League title.

That dominance secured their place in the traditional curtain-raiser.

Their opponents, Crystal Palace, earned their spot by winning the FA Cup.

They stunned Manchester City in the final at Wembley, winning 1-0.

Eberechi Eze’s first-half goal settled the showcase event, and handed Pep Guardiola’s side a trophyless season.

The game will mark Liverpool’s first Community Shield appearance in three years.

Their last came in 2022, when they beat City 3-1 at the King Power Stadium.

Prior to that, they lost back-to-back Community Shields 5-4 on penalties, to City and Arsenal in 2019 and 2020 respectively.

In total, Liverpool have won the trophy 16 times in their history, whether under the name Charity Shield or Community Shield.

A win in August would move them joint-second in the all-time winners’ list with Arsenal, and four behind Man United, who have won it on a record 21 occasions.

The match will take place one week before the 2025/26 Premier League season begins.

And history offers a twist: the last time a Community Shield winner went on to be crowned Premier League champions was back in 2018, when City beat Chelsea 2-0 before pipping Liverpool to the title.

Now, it’s Liverpool vs Palace.

Trophy on the line.

Season on the horizon.
