Liverpool must expect to face competition if it plans to revisit its interest in signing Marc Guehi during the January transfer window.

Guehi was denied a move to Anfield at the 11th hour on deadline day, as Palace pulled the plug on the switch after Oliver Glasner reportedly threatened to quit if his captain were sold.

Guehi's contract is due to expire next summer, when he will be free to leave as a free agent, but there is also the possibility of Liverpool returning with a bid for Guehi in January.

Unfortunately — from a Liverpool perspective, at least — the Reds are unlikely to have the free run at Guehi that they seemingly had this summer.

Barcelona, Bayern Munich, and Juventus are all said to be keen on the England international, whose stock has risen dramatically over the last 18 months.

From January 1, 2026, Guehi will be free to sign a pre-contract agreement with a foreign club ahead of a free transfer the following summer, when Guehi would be likely to pocket a hefty signing-on fee on top of a lucrative contract.

And former Liverpool midfielder Dietmar Hamann has warned the Reds to expect to face a fight to land a player who came agonisingly close to being their player just a few days ago.

“Marc Guehi will be the January priority for Liverpool, but there'll be more teams interested in signing him," Hamann told Adventure Gamers.

“Teams don't really like to sell in January because it's very hard to find a replacement, but it's obviously the last possibility to get some money for him because his contract's up in the summer.

“I think there'll be more competition in January for Liverpool than there was in the summer, they should expect that.”

Guehi was all smiles as he reported for England duty less than 24 hours from Monday's disappointment, but The Guardian reported on Tuesday that the player was "extremely unhappy" with Palace's late intervention.

There is no suggestion that Guehi will refuse to play for Palace, a la Alexander Isak, but his frustration is understandable given how his deadline day panned out.

Palace boss Glasner had made no secret of his desire to keep Guehi in recent weeks

Speaking after Palace's 3-0 win against Aston Villa on Sunday, in which Guehi scored, Glasner said: "I told the chairman we have to keep Marc if we want to play a successful season.

"We have no chance to find the right replacement in one day

We all agreed that we just sell Marc if we have the right replacement in the building.

"We wanted a replacement by 1 July
