Liverpool’s record signing Florian Wirtz is already feeling the weight of expectation at Anfield, with former England international Shaun Wright-Phillips suggesting the pressure on the German star will be far greater than on other emerging talents.
Wirtz completed a stunning $136 million (£100 million) move from Bayer Leverkusen to Liverpool on with a further $22 million (£16 million) potentially to be activated in add-ons, becoming one of the most expensive signings in Premier League history.
He said: "I hope he does well at Liverpool, because I know he’s a fantastic player.
"So I really hope that Liverpool get good value from him, because when you pay 100 million euros, people are going to put pressure on and ask questions, even if it’s not up to him.
"The limelight is on him now, in a way it isn’t on Rayan Cherki.
But Wirtz brings something that Liverpool don’t have right now, in that he can play cute little passes that Mac Allister can only do every so often
His mindset is so much more attacking."
Arne Slot reportedly traveled to the south of France earlier this month to meet with Cherki and explore the possibility of bringing the Lyon star to Liverpool
According to The Athletic, the Liverpool head coach took time out of his holiday to hold the face-to-face talks with Cherki, ahead of the club stepping up negotiations for Wirtz
