Liverpool told they are about to sign a brilliant Philippe Coutinho and Roberto Firmino hybrid player

Liverpool have had some excellent Brazilians in their time and they are almost always fan favourites.

Arne Slot may have a star-studded team at his disposal right now but nostalgia makes fans wonder how previous stars would fit into his system.

Brazilian duo Philippe Coutinho and Roberto Firmino are just two of these individuals, with Liverpool missing some of their flair at points this season.

They would so often tear Premier League defences to shreds under Jurgen Klopp’s ‘heavy metal football’, with both having the ability to create, but also find the back of the net.

However, although they won’t be rejoining anytime soon, one Liverpool legend believes that they are about to sign a player that shows similarities to both of them.

Costing Liverpool around £118m, fans will be hoping that Florian Wirtz can live up to all the hype, something that might be hard given the pressure on his shoulders.

However, with Phil Thompson comparing the German to two previous fan favourites, supporters might be put more at ease and hopeful that he will hit the same heights.

“Wirtz is a proper player, I think the club see him as a cross between a Bobby Firmino and Philippe Coutinho, that sort of nine and a half,” Thompson told talkSPORT.

“He’s got that great ability to get in between the lines to be creative and I think one of those areas where we struggled last year was the packed defences.

“We did break them down eventually, but I think Arne Slot is looking for that player who can work between the lines and be creative, but still come up with some goals.”

Liverpool are still rumoured to want a striker after signing Wirtz, but if Thompson is right, they might not even need to begin their search.

One trait that made Coutinho and Firmino stand out from the rest was that they had the ability to score and create, something Wirtz also has proven he can do.

122 goal involvements in 197 games is nothing short of sensational, a statistic made even more impressive by the fact he is still only 22.

Wirtz has the ability to dribble past opponents with ease and show composure in the final third, another similarity to both Coutinho and ‘Bobby’.

The transfer fee is certainly steep but if he performs to anywhere near the levels these two did during their time at Liverpool, it will all be made worthwhile.
