Liverpool have made some shrewd signings and they are set up for an exciting season.

Retaining the Premier League title is one of the hardest jobs possible, meaning the Reds have had to make some pretty big moves to give them the best chance of achieving this feat.

Arne Slot appears to have something of a super team on his hands and it is one made to last, with many of Liverpool’s stars not even in their prime just yet.

This is a frightening prospect for the fans and something that will strike fear into their opponents’ eyes for years to come, and it would be no surprise to see the Reds dominate just like Manchester City did.

However, despite all the excellent business they have done over the last month or so, it looks like one of their most astute transfers actually occurred last summer, with one player being branded ‘one of the best in the world’.

With Alisson Becker between the sticks at Anfield, most goalkeepers would struggle to get a look in and the majority would not even attempt to compete with him, but Giorgi Mamardashvili looks ready to fight.

The Georgian international was signed by Liverpool last summer but remained at Valencia for the season, with the 24-year-old now officially joining the club.

Although most expect Alisson to remain number one, Mamardashvili will still get minutes and compete for a starting spot, with his national team manager revealing exactly what he will bring to the Reds this season.

“I will say this leadership that he’s showing with us, I’m sure he’s going to be able to reproduce that in Liverpool,” Willy Sagnol told Liverpoolfc.com.

“He’s clearly a goalkeeper that will save you a lot of points during a season.

On his line he’s tall but he’s also very quick.

“When it’s about saving in his box, in my opinion, he’s one of the best in the world at the moment.

“He also knows how to bring confidence to the others because he’s somebody who’s quite calm.

He has a very positive quietness.”

Liverpool previously had one of the best back-up goalkeepers in the league in the form of Caoimhin Kelleher, but despite losing him to Brentford this summer, they appear to have replaced him perfectly.

There was no denying that Mamardashvili was one of the best goalkeepers at Euro 2024, but when Liverpool were linked with him, it certainly raised plenty of eyebrows.

Many thought he was too good to be the back-up, with a lot of fans believing that he was coming in to replace Alisson, sending many into a meltdown.

However, it quickly became clear that he was a longer-term option and he will replace the Brazilian when that time comes.

Alisson has one year remaining on his contract plus an option for a further year, something the club will likely trigger.

This will be dependent on form, however, as they may want to keep him between the sticks for another two years or even add the extra year so they can sell him for a small fee.

Either way, no matter how good Alisson has been for Liverpool, his time at the club is approaching the end, but it appears that the Reds are in safe hands with Mamardashvili.
