Liverpool have been told that they will still have to pay a big fee to secure the signing of Marc Guehi from Crystal Palace in January.

Guehi’s deadline day move to Anfield was called off at the last moment, with Palace blocking the deal after failing to find a replacement for their captain.

It was reported that Oliver Glasner had threatened to quit the South London club if the England international had been sold, with no incoming to fill the void.

As a result, the 25-year-old will remain at Selhurst Park until the transfer window reopens, with Liverpool expected to go back in for him.

However, Everton’s former chief Keith Wyness – who served as CEO at Goodison Park between 2004 and 2009 and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – believes that Arne Slot’s side will still be forced to pay a big fee to seal the deal.

Speaking on the new edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, Wyness insisted that Crystal Palace will demand more than people expect for their captain.

With his contract at Selhurst Park expiring next summer, many believe that Guehi would be available for a reduced price in January.

Wyness added that the Reds would likely have to pay around £25m to £30m in order to stave off other interest and secure the centre-back.

He told Football Insider‘s Inside Track podcast: “I’m pretty sure that there’ll be discussions going on about what the fee will be in January, and it won’t be £35m.

“Liverpool will still want him, though, and I think they may end up having to pay something like £25m or £30m if they’re going to lock him up, because there’s going to be a lot of interest around him at the end of the year.

“If Liverpool are going to lock him up, it may not be as low as everybody thinks it’s going to be.

I think that Palace could still command a serious amount of money in January.

“Guehi has acted superbly, he’s got a lot of kudos for the way he’s behaved himself.”

Meanwhile, Liverpool are unlikely to continue their astonishing summer spending at the same rate in upcoming transfer windows, sources have told Football Insider.

The Merseyside club have broken the British transfer record twice over the past couple of months, and accrued a total outlay of around £450million this summer.

Florian Wirtz became the most expensive Premier League signing of all time after making an £116million switch from Bayer Leverkusen, before that was eclipsed by Alexander Isak’s £125m move to Anfield.

However, sources say that the Reds will not be as frivolous with their spending in January or next summer, and that this window was an outlier.
