Former Liverpool defender Dominic Matteo has told his old club to appoint Tottenham's Ange Postecoglou as Jurgen Klopp's successor.

The Reds are looking for a new manager, with their legendary German boss stepping down this summer.

Several names have been linked with the soon-to-be vacant manager's job at Anfield, including Xabi Alonso, Ruben Amorim and Roberto de Zerbi.

However, Alonso has opted to remain at Bayer Leverkusen for at least one more season, with Sporting CP boss Almorin now the favourite to succeed Klopp.

Reports in Portugal on Monday claimed Liverpool have reached a verbal agreement with representatives of Amorim over a three-year contract are premature with the process to recruit their next manager, led by Fenway Sports Group football supremo Michael Edwards, ongoing.

But Matteo believes Liverpool should turn their attention towards trying to prise Postecoglou away from Tottenham Hotspur.

He shares his belief that the Australian has the personality to manage a club of Liverpool's size.

“In terms of who replaces Jurgen Klopp, it has to be Ange Postecoglou at Spurs for me,” he said via William Hill.

I’ve been impressed with his first season at Spurs – the way he deals with the media and the way his team plays on the front foot is admirable.

“He seems to be an excellent man-manager which is needed at this high level of the game – particularly at a club like Liverpool – plus he can deal with the pressure and has won silverware.

"It seems Xabi Alonso has chosen to not pursue the job at this stage of his career and Ruben Amorim and Roberto De Zerbi are other managers on the list who could be available, but Postecoglou should be their first choice.”
