Liverpool have been told what they need to do turn around their Champions League quarter-final with Real Madrid in the second leg at Anfield after a display that started out “a mess” in the Spanish capital.

“To stop Real you have to stop their midfielders from playing because they are the heartbeat of the team.

“Mistakes led to both of Real’s goals before the break, but Liverpool looked likely to concede all the time whenever they came under pressure and, defensively, they looked well off the pace.

“Liverpool still have a chance of rescuing themselves (in the second leg), but I have not seen much evidence to suggest they can pull it off.”

Outlining what his former club need to do to turn things around, Liverpool legend Mark Lawrenson, who lifted the trophy with them in 1984, along with five League Championships, an FA Cup, and three League Cups, told the BBC: “Tuesday was an awful night for Liverpool.

Liverpool found themselves 2-0 down after 36 minutes following goals from Vinicius Junior and Marco Asensio and although Mohamed Salah halved the deficit six minutes into the second half, Brazil international Vinicius struck again on 65 minutes to restore the hosts’ two-goal cushion.

In a repeat scoreline of when the sides last met in the competition in the 2018 final in Kiev, Jurgen Klopp’s men were defeated 3-1 by Zinedine Zidane’s charges on Tuesday night.
