Liverpool may have their sights set on a big season, but a Premier League title alone might not satisfy the ambition now brewing at Anfield.

Former Manchester United coach Rene Meulensteen believes there’s more on the cards — if one transfer goes through.

Speaking to Poker Strategy, Meulensteen said, “If Liverpool manage to get the Alexander Isak deal over the line, I think they’d be looking at winning the treble next season; that’s how powerful they’ll be.”

It’s a bold shout, but not without reason.

Yet there’s a feeling in some corners of the fanbase — and the pundit world — that one more major addition up top could be the difference between a good season and a great one.

Meulensteen also praised Liverpool’s managerial planning, saying Arne Slot has continued Jurgen Klopp’s work in style.

That’s everything Man United have done badly in the last decade.”

Now that’s what you call a backheel compliment.

Liverpool have already made a bid of around £110 million for Isak, according to Sky Sports.

But from a Liverpool fan point of view, I don’t want the club to spend £150m on Isak.”

He went on to question the planning behind signing Ekitike for big money, only to chase another striker.

Isak, who scored 23 Premier League goals last season, didn’t join Newcastle’s pre-season tour in Asia.

But for now, Liverpool fans will be watching the transfer window like it’s stoppage time in a cup final.
