Former Tottenham Hotspur striker Darren Bent has backed Darwin Nunez to come good at Liverpool and believes the forward deserves another season to prove his worth.

Nunez got off to an encouraging start to the current campaign but has seen his form drastically deteriorate since returning from the March international break, scoring just once in his last 11 appearances in all competitions, coinciding with Mohamed Salah and Luis Diaz also losing their way.

The spotlight is on the Uruguayan due to the transfer fee paid by the Reds to bring the 24-year-old to Anfield two years ago, spending an initial sum of £64.1million plus £21m in possible add-ons - some of which have already been triggered.

It remains to be seen what incoming manager Arne Slot decides is the appropriate step to take with the ex-Benfica star as he prepares to weigh up whether he can bring the best out of the Reds' No.9 or should cash in and put his own stamp on the team.

Speaking to talkSPORT, Bent said: “I really like him.

I think he will come good, I really do.”

Only adding to the speculation surrounding his future, Nunez took the decision to delete all of his Liverpool-related posts on Instagram - with the exception of a photo of him arriving at the AXA Training Centre the day after signing.
